S.D. Ireland Brothers Corporation is a multifaceted company headquartered in Williston, Vermont and performs heavy/civil construction, site preparation, and paving. We are seeking an Estimator to join our successful and growing team.
This position will be responsible for preparing complete and accurate estimates in support of our operations in Northern Vermont. This position is working in person at our main office located at 193 Industrial Avenue in Williston, VT.
We work with a wide range of entities including Federal, State, Local Municipalities, privately owned and joint venture projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Must be highly organized and able to manage crucial deadlines.
- Efficiently utilize company estimating software Bid2Win (B2W) in providing accurate estimates
- Review proposal contract documents and attend pre-bid meetings as required.
- Visit project for comprehensive understanding of site logistics, restrictions, and conditions.
- Evaluate plans and job specifications to plan effective procedures for construction management and efficient cost estimates
- Perform digital and/or plan takeoffs for project quantities and scopes.
- Contact vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors for quotes.
- Analyze associated documentation, phasing, cost coding, work breakouts etc.
- Communicates with architects and consultants to clarify scopes of work, materials, and schedule requirements; and properly documents these clarifications.
- Perform subcontract and material supplier quote review and ensure accurate entry
- Input and organize data in estimating software to prepare proper cost estimates
- Identify potential risks, opportunities and alternative solutions
- Generate RFI’s necessary for proper cost estimates and to establish a competitive baseline
- Work closely with Operations, Project Managers, and Materials Managers during the bidding process to ensure accuracy of data used to estimate the project.
- Identify, solicit and obtain appropriate level of DBE partners throughout the bid process, ensure that project goals have been met
- Prepares qualifications, assumptions and exclusions that align with contractual requirements of project.
- Review bid source files to ensure most recent information prior to bid day
- Prepare and manage final bid package throughout final delivery and/or bid submission
- Create, prepare and present potential VE solutions and other marketing strategies
- Facilitate presentations and qualifications of scope and methodologies
- Upon award, review contract and estimate scope/qualifications and negotiate contract buyout
- Facilitate contract handoff to PM and Operations i.e. contract, scope, qualifications, schedule, long lead items, special conditions, etc.
- Track and record bid results history for continuous improvement
- Develop and oversee methods to benchmark estimating data with job costing data, to improve sales, profits and department systems

- Engage with management, trade partners and clients to build trustworthy, long-term, mutually profitable relationships
- Perform any other duties as assigned by management
- Participate in the hiring, development, and evaluation of estimating staff
- Research and track new bidding opportunities within the company's primary and secondary markets
- Interpret and explain costs and budgets to project management and field personnel as needed during construction.
- Review all change order requests prepared by project management to confirm if maximized profit opportunity.
- Conduct progress and post construction review of projected and actual construction costs compared to estimated bid costs.
Required Credentials and Experience:
- Minimum of two years’ experience with preparing heavy and civil construction estimates utilizing Bid2Win software
- Minimum of a Associate's Degree in Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture or related field
- Experience with AutoCad, Bluebeam, InSite or other estimating takeoff software
- Experience with Microsoft Office including Excel Spreadsheet, MS Word and MS Project
- General knowledge of construction principles and processes.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
- General knowledge of negotiated bids and hard bids.
- Strong math and analytical skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Solid interpersonal and communication skills.
- Clean driving record and the ability to pass a background investigation, and drug screening. Able to access State & Federal Facilities
